Michigan Timber Harvesting: From Forest to Farm
When you think of Michigan, your mind might wander to its iconic auto industry, but did you know that this state once led the nation in lumber production? In fact, the logging industry’s roots run deep here, beginning just a few miles from our location. Michigan’s abundant forests and strategic waterways made it a hub for timber production during the late 19th century.
A Historic Timber Legacy
By the mid-1800s, Michigan’s towering pines became the backbone of the nation’s growing infrastructure. Many mills sprang up along the Saginaw River, which empties into Saginaw Bay and Lake Huron. These waterways were essential for transporting lumber from forest to mill, and then onward to markets across the country. At its peak in 1889-1890, Michigan saw an astonishing 5.5 billion board feet of lumber—mostly pine—harvested and shipped to the Northeast and Chicago. This wood built homes, railroads, and entire cities.
However, this prosperity came at a cost. With few regulations in place and a rush of landowners eager to capitalize on inexpensive forests, Michigan’s timber reserves were quickly depleted. By the early 1900s, the state’s once-vast forests had been significantly reduced.
A Commitment to Sustainability
Though the heyday of the lumber boom is long past, decades of restoration efforts have rejuvenated Michigan’s forests. Today, more than half of the state is forested, with over 20 million acres of land supplying industries with some of the finest hardwoods in North America. This commitment to sustainability ensures that Michigan’s timber industry continues to thrive while preserving natural resources for generations to come.
